This avocado kefir smoothie is soooooo creamy that it will fool you into thinking that you are having the best milkshake of your life. But guess what? It’s actually dairy-free! It’s also packed with nutrients and protein to keep you healthy and happy.
How to Make a Smoothie Creamy without Using Dairy
Making a creamy, dairy-free smoothie is actually simpler than you might think. You only need some avocado and chia seeds.
Avocados are naturally fatty and creamy so, when they get blended, they give drinks the consistency of a milkshake.
Chia seeds are not only full of nutrients but also absorb moisture really fast. They are a popular ingredient in smoothies because of their health benefits and because they help to thicken drinks.
How to Make a Healthy Smoothie that will Keep You Full
In addition to the healthy fats from the avocado and the nutrients found in chia seeds, this avocado kefir smoothie also features some almond butter and collagen powder.
Almond butter is great to add to smoothies because it is packed with protein, so it helps to keep you full longer. Just make sure to buy good quality almond butter with no sugar or salt added.
Collagen is an important part of a healthy body. It helps to keep your tendons and ligaments working, and it is also associated with skin health. Adding a little extra to your diet can give you healthier skin and hair and might also relieve joint pain. If you would like to know more about the benefits of collagen, check out this article.
What is Kefir?
Kefir is a probiotic drink thought to be good for gut health.ย It is made out of fermented kefir grains and milk and tastes similar to yogurt.
For this recipe, I used kefir made from coconut milk, which makes it dairy-free. If you canโt find kefir at your local grocery store, you can always make your own. You just need to buy some kefir grains and follow the directions on the package.

That is one nutritious smoothie. Avocado and kefir…that really packs a punch. This certainly would keep me full from one meal to the next.
Right up my alley!! Always looking for more healthy recipes and I don’t like smoothies with so much fruit. I’m a big fan of avocados in smoothies for all the reasons you mention and with so much protein from great sources this is going to be an amazing post workout refuel.
Thanks, Debra! I’m the same way: the less fruit in my smoothie, the better! ๐
I still have yet to try kefir but I really want to. This recipe looks like a great way to jump in and try it because I start almost every morning with a smoothie already. I love that you’ve used an avocado in this for creaminess and healthy fat!
You really should! Kefir is so good for you, and it works great in smoothies ๐
With summer coming on and all the activities sometime I just don’t feel like time out for a sit down lunch. Now the avocado kefir smoothie sounds like it would be ideal — refreshing and satisfying. I didn’t know you could make your own kefir. I’m going to have to look it to it. Thank you for the tips.
You are welcome, Marisa!
Wow, I’ve never added collagen to anything before but I’ve thought about. This sounds so healthy and nutritious, I think now that I have such a great recipe, I’m ready! Thank you!
Thank you, Tracy!
Consider me intrigued. I’ve never used collagen before, but I’m all in favour of amping up the nutritional profile of a smoothie. I love avocadoes though, and I have to say that I just don’t use them often enough in smoothies and sweet drinks. I first learned about it many years ago when I saw avocado bubble teas, but I just haven’t given it a try myself. This looks too good not to make though… so I guess it’s time I get started!
Avocado bubble tea??? I definitely need to try one of those! ๐
Ooooh I love kefir and I love avocados! We always buy the bags of avocados from Costco so there are always a few that get kinda brown before we get to them. This would be perfect for those!
Now THIS is a hearty smoothie! I have collagen powder in my pantry and I’ve been trying to figure out some different ways to use it. I’m looking forward to giving this a shot.
Let me know how you like it, Dana!
